Experimenta Design 2011 - "useless"

Made Out Portugal will be presenting new work from their collective in the upcoming Experimenta Design Lisbon in late September.
The exhibition is entitled “Linha Branca” and assumes a group of intentions translated into projects from different areas of design. Undefined projects, temporarily white colored, without any production line settled or label – useless! An exhibition of ideas thought out for the portuguese context and which are looking for a colaboration with Portugal – useful!

Linha Branca is a proposal from the Made Out Portugal Platform and a challenge to the portuguese designers currently residing in Europe to design ideas for out and in of Portugal.

For the International Design Festival Berlin we asked the designers to tell a story about their projects. Here they are:

Bruno Carvalho - Tempelhof Lamp

“In 1948, during the famous airlift that avoided Berlin’s inhabitants to starve to death, another operation gained widespread attention – the Little Vittles operation. Carried by the ally pilots, in order to help the morale of the German children during the soviet blockade, they started dropping candies attached to the parachutes before landing. By the end of the airlift, 23 tons of candy were dropped around Berlin Tempelhof Airport.”

The Tempelhof Lamp is the second project from the site-specific furniture concept.
The lamp design was extracted from an architecture detail from the main facade of
Berlin Tempelhof Airport.

João Valente - #Another contemporary chair

“This story is about a Chair that was completely full of herself. She was so vain about the elegance of her body, she was so in love with the touch of her skin, she was always talking about the beautiful smell of her mdf when she was cut by the laser cuter. In her own world she was the one, she couldn’t stand the idea of being considered as a regular chair, even though she was just one other mdf chair.
One day while she was talking with some friends, she realized that all her strength was in the concept of being beautiful and perfect. All my perfection and all my beauty it is too much to be an object, she said to the others. Since that day she lives as a concept.”

#Another contemporary chair exists as a concept that contains in its shape the
information of a chair. The idea of this chair is a representation of how designers are most
of the time using this object as a canvas to express their point of views, concerns and
thoughts.

Manuel Amaral Netto - Dock Lamp

“It was late in the evening Tivadar Puskás was sitting in front of a vertical panel containing banks of 1/4 inch tip ring sleeve jacks. This is an old telephone switch. This is used to connect telephone calls. The evening had been running slow until finally a signal lamp near the jack started blinking. In a reflex Puskás plugs one of the answering cords into the blinking jack. Puts on his headphones and speaks to the microphone: “Number Please?”. In his headphones he hears: “Can you turn on the light, please?”. “One second, please” – He replies. Puskás has a quick look over the switch panel until he finds the correct dock to plug it.”

Dock Lamp is a lamp that is connected not by a button but rather by a precise action. It is not the simple and everyday action of turning the light on with the click of a button but instead you move the light and place it on a specific place, depending on the type of light you need. You are the switch. Move the Lamp!

Paulo Sellmayer - Spore Vase

“Certain types of cheese require inoculation of milk curds with fungal species that impart a unique flavor and texture to the cheese. The Danish blue, the Stilton or Roque fort all have a unique flavour given by the inoculation with Penicillium roqueforti. The presence of fungi in our daily life is quite invisible but surpasses the imaginable. Things like beer, antibiotics or sake all have in common the use of fungi in some stage of their production.”

Spore is a fungi vase. It creates innocuous vessels so that the natural beauty of these
otherwise disgusting organisms can be appreciated, as if they were flowers.
The cultivating media is inoculated through a hole on the top.
The spores that exist in the surrounding air are the seeds that will flourish.

For the DMY exhibition we wanted to think of a new way to present our work. Being displaced designers and again having to move to exhibit in Berlin we became aware that we would always need to move our work there. So we might as well move along with it and bring it ourselves in a truck. The idea started of as a way to exhibit our work on the move. Go around with our work packed and ready to show. All we have to do is open the truck and show it to the people passing by. This was what, in part, we ended up doing. We spent a couple of days building a gallery inside a truck. Building walls, ceiling, lights and a floor. The truck became a totally black gallery where we could exhibit our work.

Dutch Design Week 2011 Projects

Ana Rita Sousa - HSART

In a contemporary society, objects are no longer permanent fixtures in a person’s life. The relationship between people and objects has become increasingly ephemeral. We’ve entered a new age that is driven by consumption, where the reason to throw something away is no longer due to it being broken, ripped, or faded.
An untold amount of objects still in good condition are thrown away everyday in the cities of Amsterdam.
I have observed this phenomenon daily for almost two years and then finally came a point when I had to do something about it.
This collection is made up of trashed objects that I picked up on the streets. To counteract this idea of consumption, it is my goal to show and invite you to give each object a chance for a new life.
Based in Portuguese traditional bazaars, objects can be randomly acquired by the visitors.

Branca Cuvier - Secrets Dealer

- I am precious
Before….
…When people had secrets they didn’t want to share
…They would climb a mountain
They would find a tree
and carve a hole in it
And whisper the secret into the hole
Then cover it over with mud.
That way, nobody else would ever discover it.
We are closer to each other more than we can ever imagine. We will never know about it, because owning and keeping our own secret is what makes us feel unique.
This project is about having the chance to feel a bit less unique and reveal our secrets, such as special tastes, bizarre things, weird or normal worships…

Bruno Carvalho - Smalle Haven Chaise Longue

Having as a starting point, that the architect does architecture and design but the designer does design and not architecture, I developed a production process that allows the creation of furniture pieces from interior architecture forms.

Filipa Ricardo - About Waste

About waste is a series of products where the main material comes from industrial waste, the unwanted parts that come out of production lines.
These materials are then combined with others to embody a renewed life.
From CNC waste boards and old used wool blankets this stool is structured in layers fused together with 6 metal axis.
Both the waste and the blankets are ‘made in Holland’ as this stool is a result of a project development period sponsored by an artistic residency in Eindhoven.
Other objects are being developed for this series as it is a research and work in progress.

Manuel Amaral Netto - Dock Lamp

Dock lamp is a lamp that is connected not by a button but rather by a precise action. It is not the simple and everyday action of turning the light on with the click of a button but instead you move the light and place it on a specific place. This specific place not only offers the needed electrical current but is also related with your activity in the room, may it be reading or working or just giving an ambient light. It is composed of a structure that extends itself along the space and that has different points to place your light.
These points with electrical current are positioned at different heights and angles and by placing the lamp on one of these points it lights up. To turn it off you take it back to its resting place.

Paulo Sellmayer - Spore Vase

Spore is a fungi vase.
Present in every environment , spores develop into fungi given the proper conditions to do so. In our sterilized world they are never really seen due to its repulsive nature.
This vase creates an innocuous vessel for the growth of these organisms, so that they can be fully appreciated.
The cultivating media is the propeller injected through a hole on the top with a needle.

Tiago Sá da Costa - Bootlegged Table

Este projecto tem na sua origem a reutilização e re-interpretação de garrafas, que em outro caso seriam consideradas lixo e aqui são revalorizadas em peças de mobiliário. O objectivo do Bottlegged é criar uma linha de peças conjugando o vidro com outros materiais.
A selecção das garrafas utilizadas resulta do consumo de bebidas na Holanda, que fazem parte do cenário da vivência portuguesa.
A escolha destas bebidas, e respectivas garrafas, vai para além do simples acto de beber e passa a representar algo mais intimo e nostálgico dando às garrafas, e consequentemente às peças que resultam delas, um forte cunho simbólico.
